Steamed tofu with minced meat is a Chinese recipe which is very easy to prepare. Tofu by itself is bland and does not have much taste. It needs to be complemented with other ingredients to bring up its flavour. This is my to-go recipe and is really very easy to prepare. This is the perfect dish to cook if you are looking for an easy yet delicious recipe. Moreover, steaming retains most of the nutrients of the tofu.
Besides using an electronic steamer, tofu can be steamed in a pan, pot or wok. All you need to do is to bring the water in the pan to boil, then place the plate of tofu into the pan and cover it. Reduce heat to the minimum and allow it to steam for about 10 minutes.
Silken tofu is best used in this recipe. Otherwise, medium or hard tofu may also be used. Before steaming, do remove excess water by placing weight on a piece of kitchen paper on top of the tofu for at least 5 minutes.
If you are a vegetarian, skip the meat and double the amount of shiitaki mushrooms. Substitute mushroom sauce instead of oyster sauce.
Place tofu on the plate and add weight on it to extract excess water.
Mix oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce and soy sauce to meat and marinate for 5 minutes. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry minced garlic and minced onions until fragrant. Add marinated meat, mushrooms and continue to stir fry. Add water. Mix cornstarch with a bit of water. Add to gravy to thicken it.
Steam tofu for 10 minutes. Remove tofu from steamer and drain excess water.
Pour gravy on top of steamed tofu. Garnish with sliced scallions and chillies.
