Infused date water is a refreshing drink which is easy to prepare. This naturally sweet drink is associated with the fasting month of Ramadan. During this holy month, Muslims usually break fast after a long day with dates as the fruit helps to improve the level of blood glucose. Thus, this drink is perfect as an energy booster.

Health benefits of dates water

Dates are known to be a great source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Many swear that it improves skin and hair conditions too. With the high content of fiber, dates helps in soothing digestive issues. As the drink lays in the alkaline spectrum on the pH scale, it also helps in balancing the acidity in the stomach. However, taking too many dates can cause a natural laxative effect. Therefore, prepare the drink as suggested for normal consumption.

Types of dates

All types of dates can be used for this recipe except Chinese red, black or honey dates. We used Medjool and it turned out great. However, those who drink this regularly love using the Ajwa dates which are like little packs of soft fruit with sweet and luscious flesh. This variation of dates is known to be a popular choice for infused date water.

Duration to soak dates

Infused water usually needs about 2 hours before you quench your thirst with it. Date water takes a little longer for the natural sugar and dates to break down. The sweet spot is said to take at least 8 hours but no longer than 12 hours as leaving dates to soak for too long may kick start the fermentation process and create alcohol instead.

Date water for babies and toddlers

Dates are extremely nutritious for babies and toddlers. It is safe to be consumed by babies above 6 months and toddlers. Ensure that dates are fully blended (as shown in step 2) and sieve the drink before serving it to babies. You do not want to have chunks of dates flesh which could pose a danger to babies.

Additional sweetener

The drink is naturally sweet. If you want it to be a little sweeter, stir in a teaspoon of honey. It might affect the flavour of the drink depending on the type of honey used. Personally, we love mild honey like the classic Acacia as the taste of dates is simply so delicious and we didn't want to alter it.

How long can date water be kept?

Date water can be kept for up to 2 days after infusing provided that the drink is refrigerated. Keeping the drink cold slows down the start of the fermentation process. If you are not expecting to drink alcohol, avoid date water which has been kept for too long.
