Background

Easy wonton recipe for every type of cook! Using fresh ground meat and prawns to create succulent wontons which are to be boiled in a gentle yet savoury broth. Wonton soup can be enjoyed as a side or it can also be served with some egg noodles as a main dish. Wonton wrappers which are made out of wheat, egg and water are used to wrap the meat and prawn mixture.

Where to buy wonton wraps?

Wonton wraps can be found in the frozen section of the Asian grocer, Thaw them before using to wrap wontons.

Halal wontons

You may opt for minced chicken thighs and skip shaoxing wine. Shaoxing wine is added for its sweetness.

Fried wontons or boiled wontons?

If you do not like wantans in soup, you can opt to have them fried instead. Serve with some sweet chilli sauce. You will love its crispiness.

What is wonton soup made of?

Wonton soup can be made out of chicken broth or anchovies. I prefer the latter. Simply boil anchovies for about 30 minutes with some scallions. Add salt to taste. Prepare chicken wonton soup by boiling wontons in chicken broth.

How to store wontons?

Wontons can be frozen and kept in airtight containers up to 3 months.

  • 1 scallions
  • 1 tbsp anchovies
  • 600 ml water

Boil water with spring onions and anchovies.

  • 100 g pork
  • 100 g prawns
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp shaoxing wine  
  • 0.5 cm ginger
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp sugar

Prepare wonton filling by mixing minced pork, minced prawns, soy sauce, sesame oil, shao xing wine, ginger, salt and sugar. Mix well until it creates a sticky or starchy texture.

Fill wonton wraps with 1 tablespoon of filling. Secure the 'wantan' wrap by brushing a bit of water before closing the wrap.

In the soup with spring onions and anchovies, boil 'wantans' over medium heat until they float. Optionally, add some white pepper and salt to taste.
